Is black nail polish inappropriate to wear to work?

I work in a hospital. Our dress code allows polish and doesn't mention anything about color, and a lot of people at work wear nail polish, but since black polish is edgy and sometimes gives people the wrong idea, would it be a bad idea to wear it to work?

By the way, I'm not punk or goth or anything. Is black nail polish inappropriate to wear to work?
It also depends on where you work in the hospital. Someone who deals directly with patients on a regular basis might want to consider a brighter color. Is black nail polish inappropriate to wear to work?
I agree with the best answerer.

I think working in a hospital you shold look like a professional...

in a hair salon it might be okay, but it is not appropriate in a medical setting.....
wear it and find out. worst that will happen is they will tell you to remove it.
I don't think so. It only really gives people the wrong idea if the rest of your image portrays that idea. So, I would recommend wearing bright colors of clothing while you have the nail polish on to show that you don't want people to think that of you. Black nail polish has been 'in' lately, I've seen it on a variety of shows, including What Not to Wear. Stacy London had some on, and she isn't punky/goth at all.
It'll depend on where you work. Some hospitals have rules about wearing coloured nail polish, it would be a hygiene precaution since you're working with patients and their medicines. In a corporate enviornment i.e. an office something like black nail polish tends to be frowned upon. Some people, like patients, will see black nail polish in a negative way but personally I think it looks nice.
I would say that it's okay. Just be prepared to remove it if asked. I think your attitude says more about you than your choice in nail polish colors.

Keep it looking good, so all or nothing. If it starts to chip or wear off, then repaint them or take it off, nothing looks worse than nails done in a bold color that look crappy. The bolder the color, the more noticable the mistakes and the wear.
if they don't have a nail color preference then it shouldn't matter. most places mention that now a days. i used to work in an insurance office and they said no black and i found an amazing color that i think you would love its called lincoln park after dark and its by OPI..i would wear that instead of my black and got away with it.

i don't personally think much of people because well that's them and i'm more worried about me! some people may think your gothic especially the older folks but if you are nice and come across professional they shouldn't have a problem with it. people always think im gothic since i work at a salon and we wear black its our dress code! i've been called nasty things and have people shout at me JESUS LOVES YOU! how embrassing! haha
well at your work you need to look proffesional you dont want to give a bad look but wear black polish but slightly add another color
I work at a car dealership, and the one time I wore it I got a lot of negative comments.. However, when the girl upstairs wears it, no one says a word.. Depends, I guess. At a hospital.. I would say no..
Depends on where you work. In the fashion industry, almost anything goes. In the food or health care industry, probably not.
I don't think its ok. If you want to give off the impression of being a professional, I wouldn't wear it.
How casual is the dress code? Black nail polish is all well and good with jeans and t-shirts, not so much with nice shirts and skirts/pants. However, I have seen some lovely almost-metallic black nailpolishes with a glossy shine. These are very classy and would work well with a formal dress code, and aren't as 'alternative' as a plain black.

If in doubt, why not just ask your boss?
I am suprised they let you wear polish in the hospital, they did not at the hospital I worked at. Answering your question, I would guess that it would depend on your job description; if your an RN, LPN, patient care tech, doctor or anyone else who is ';hands on'; with patients, I would say no to the black polish. If you are a secretary, transfer tech, or food service person- then go ahead. Thats my opinion
Okee dokee s'okay
I guess you don't want a raise anytime soon !
Inappropriate......
I wouldn't wear it in that environment...I would only wear it when I was going out on the town.

Chips show up easily.
ummm... I don't see why not?

If it doesn't mention anything about color, it should be fine. I think black nail polish is pretty cool. I volunteer at a hospital, and I've seen many workers there wear black nail polish. It should be fine :))
Yes. The people working at the hospitals prefer more like a nice basic French or American Manicure or nice clear, clean polish. Red, I not sure. Black, Blue %26amp; other funky colors no. Go w/ something soft. Another advise ladies, don't put on acrylics while you're working in the hospital. Make sure that your nails are nice and clean.
it might be frightening for the hospital atmosphere. some people might freak out if they are in a patient state. try sticking to calming color like blues, greens and purples.
It might disturb your patients or their families; my grandmother just got out of the hospittal with a heart attack, and one of the nurses had black nail polish. It bothered my mother and aunt quite a lot, and i wasnt very fond of it myself. Outside of nursing, in the real world, there's nothing wrong with it. It can be used as a style, or a way to make a statment.
I wouldn't wear it to work. I would wear it other places beside work so yeah try not to wear black because it seems a bit edgy
I would say so, I know you're allowed to, but it doesn't really seem hygienic in my opinion
I have several friends who are nurses in hospitals. The environment is generally too hectic for anyone to notice what anyone is wearing. I know a girl who is an ER nurse who has bright red streaks in her hair and multiple ear piercings.

If you are in more of an administrative role I would try it once to feel it out. If anyone says anything then you'll know. Technically you wouldn't have done anything wrong.
I think it would be okay if your clothes had some black in it or if you had on a black head band or something. Or maybe just put some of those pretty gems in the middle of your nails.
